Creating a Green Workplace

Computers, networking and internet have certainly changed our lives and they way we work. In the 21^st century 99% of the offices have all the above mentioned three great inventions. Every office uses computers networked to each other and also connected to the internet. Every office uses one or more servers for e-mails, hosting websites, FTPs, backups, storage the list goes on and on. No office can function without these boons of technology. Even my office has all these and it helps us function better. But these inventions are destroying our environment.

So what can we do, so that our environment is not harmed from the energy that our offices consume. The office complexes use a lot of energy there by increasing the energy consumption, which is directly proportional to the burning of fossil fuels (coal). So does that mean, our earth has to die in the hands of technology? Certainly not.

The wise usage of electricity in offices can certainly reduce the green house effect and global warming, hence saving our earth. While there are lots of ways to reduce the power consumption at offices, I will explain on how we have successfully achieved this.

1. Lighting: Lighting is a major aspect in every office. No office can function without lighting. Hence we should find a way to reduce the power consumption at offices. Instead of traditional tube lights and other bulbs, we should use CFL bulbs. The CFL bulbs give us good lighting and also consume very less electricity and also last longer. Though CFL bulbs are a bit expensive, they are cheaper in the long run.

2. Switching off Computers: A lot employees have a bad habit of locking their computers while leaving for the day. Instead they should save all their programs and turn off their computers and leave. This will also reduce the power consumed by the computers and also increase their performance.

3. Severs: Servers are the machines that should run 24X7 and we cannot turn them off. But we can reduce the power consumption in the server rooms, by switching off the lights in the server room, maintaining the right temperature inside the server room, by not allowing them to over-heat and over-cool. The UPS should also be inspected at particular intervals and replaced when necessary.

4. Air-conditions: The air-conditions in the office, should be cleaned regularly, which will improve the cooling and also reduce the power consumption. The Air-conditions should be kept at the correct temperature. Air-conditions with the star rating will greatly help in reducing the power consumption.

If all the above points are taken care of while running an office, we can greatly reduce the power consumed, there by it is a win win situation for us. Reduced electricity bill and reduced global warming.

NASA Scientist James Hansen Want Action On Global Warming

Hansen is director of the Goddard Institute of Space Studies at NASA. Hansen is on of first scientists that warm people about global warming in the 1980. He said if web (human) still produce CO2 will make disaster to our world. By using coal and other fossil fuel, this will increase CO2 concentration on our atmosphere from 385 to 600 parts per million (ppm) in the next 10 year.

Major scientists will say that cause of global warming is because human produce CO2, but not for Roy W. Spencer, a research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. But Spencer views are not shared by most science, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a multinational panel that released updated conclusions about human produced global warming and its risks last year.

How To Reduce CO2 Emissions

Hansen has some idea and solution for this :

1. Postpone building new coal fired power plant unless they have carbon sequestration technology.

2. Phasing out the use of coal fire power plant in the next 20 year. This is because largest source of future carbon emissions.

3. Tax on carbon and returning the revenues produced by it to the public through a dividend.

If Hansen proposal can be implemented i think CO2 emissions can be reduced. Goo luck Hansen.

How To Stop Global Warming From Home

Global Warmin is becoming serious problem right. Uncertain weather and storm become disaster everywhere. To reduce global warming we can’t government to act. Government to busy with politic rather than think how to reduce global warming. Demonstartion will change anything, but we can to start stop global warming from our home.

1. Change your bulb to fluorescent light bulb (cfl).

CFL bulb like Philips product will save up to 80% energy that regular bulb. You will save 300 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

2. Replace filters air conditioner

You will save save 350 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Dirty filter will make your air conditioner doing hard work.

3. Shutdown electromic stuff when you not use it.

Shuthting TV, vomputer can save a lot of energy.

4. Walk rather than use car

If you want to go somewhere near use your own foot. Car and motorcycle produce carbon dioxide.

5. Buy fresh foods instead of frozen
Frozen food uses 10 times more energy to produce. To frozen food cool storage need energy.

6. Plant a tree
A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. I plant couple of flower plant on my garden.

7. Use car sharing
Community car sharing organizations provide access to a car and your membership fee covers gas, maintenance and insurance. Many companies – such as Flexcar - offer low emission or hybrid cars too.

Maybe this is only little thing, but if all people in the world doing this, is not impossible we can save this earth.

Global Warming Threats

Currently, Earth temperatures continue to rise, occurred Anomalies season and the weather extreme. Polar ice melt, and threatening Hurricane. Ozone hole yawn, the World is on real crisis. Natural disaster, anywhere, Mostly because we RADIO (Human).

Progress of Science and Technology is not all good for us. One is global warming.

Himalaya glacier as eternal snow bank, is one of the most suffering as a result of global warming.

The Green Houe Effect

Our planet warm is because green house gases that naturally exist on atmosphere heating it by trapping energy from the sun. This is what web call greenhouse effect. If this greenhouse gases not exist our planet surface will as cold as Moon (-18 degrees celsius). Our planet surface now have temperature about 15 degrees celsius.

Measurements taken from all over the world, however, have shown that the global climate is changing. In the last 100 years the atmosphere has warmed up by about half a degree Celsius. Also during this time humans have been emitting extra greenhouse gases, which are the result of burning fossil fuels (like coal, oil and gas). These gases include carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide.

It’s true that we made emissions of greenhouse gases by using fossil fuels. The extra greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap more energy and therefore enhance the greenhouse effect. This may cause more warming. Greenhouse gases are also released by the exhausts of motor vehicles and the cutting down of rain forests.

LCD Increases Global Warming

Perhaps many people do not know much about the impact of pollution from LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) television. From the results of the research scientist Michael Prather, from New Scientist, a service that focuses on science and technology news, that chemicals used to make LCD televisions and semi-conductor global warming could cause more fuel than coal.

Trifluorida nitrogen (NF3) is a “greenhouse gas that is not visible,” based on research from the journal entitled “Geophysical Research Letters” on 26 last June. I am glad that you are reading this article, and hence I believe that either you have decided to clean our earth or thinking about cleaning our earth. It might be confusing to you in the beginning , on how to start and where to start. Well do not worry, we at earthivist will help you with it.

To begin with, do not hit the street and start spreading the message, on keeping our city clean and green or any such things. First we need to check what we as an individual are doing to keep our earth clean? Is our house clean and green? Is our backyard clean? Do we have a tree or a plant in our house? Is our house and its surroundings clean?

If the answer for any of the above questions is “no”, then you must read on.

The first step is to leave behind the thought, “What government is doing for us?” This thought is the basis of all evil. So we must kill this thought. The next step is to setup a good garbage disposal system right in our own homes. For instance, keep a minimum of two or three separate garbage bins at your home or at your backyard. Into one you will be dumping all the waste materials from your kitchen, your left overs, waste papers, tissue papers, toilet papers etc. Remember in the first bin you should dump only the things, which are biodegradable.

Into the second one dump the ones which are non-biodegradable and into the third dump the e-wastes generated from your home or office computers and other electronic goods and gadgets.

Now you have segregated your garbage into three main categories. Next is what? The next thing is to take care on what goes into the garbage bins and trying to reduce them. That does not mean keeping the garbage right inside your home, but it means trying to reduce your garbage contribution. Take proper care on what goes into the garbage bin and how you can avoid them from going into the garbage bin. By doing this you will be reducing the pollution. Try reducing the e-waste and the non-biodegradable waste first, because they pollute our environment more than anything else. Try avoiding the usage of non-biodegradable materials. Do not throw used electronic materials, rather sell them to anyone else, or auction them on e-bay, or exchange them for any new gadgets and last but not the least donate them to charity.

What is Earthivist is all about?

This is my first post on this blog, hence I should make things clear on what earthivist is all about. Earthivist is all about bringing the issues that our planet faces in our cruel hands. Why should i use such harsh words, in my very first post. The reason being the condition of our planet earth. The condition is some what better in the developed countries, but in developing countries it is hopeless. Earth is experiencing severe torture everyday. Reason the desire to become developed and acquire wealth no matter what happens, lower level of education, no knowledge about the environment, no knowledge about noise pollution, air pollution, water pollution etc,. Rich, poor, middle class all coming together and polluting the environment as if it is their single most goal in life.

Well this blog is not a source to play the blame game, but it is a source, to make people understand, what we are doing and make them realize that if this goes on we will be turning our planet into a polluted one, which cannot sustain any living being. This will not happen in our life time but in the life time of our future generation.

So, is this is what we have in store for our future generation? Is this what are we going to pass onto our future generation? How will I children's children survive, and what about their children? So it is time that we act together and make our planet a better place for us as well as our future generation. So let's all come together and make a decision to stop polluting our earth more and do something to clean it.
